Hormonal contraceptive use in Norway, 2006-2020, by contraceptive type, age and county: A nationwide register-based study

Aim: Our aim was to study hormonal contraceptive use among women in Norway during 2006-2020 according age groups and geography, including choice of method, type prescriber for long-acting reversible contraceptives, prescriber’s adherence the national health authority recommendations.Material methods: We conducted a nationwide drug utilization all aged 16-49 years 2006-2020. The Norwegian Prescription Database (NorPD) includes detailed information about dispensed prescription medications from pharmacies individuals ambulatory care, year dispensing, patient’s birth county residence, profession.Results: This shows slight increase overall contraceptives 16-49-year-olds 2006-2018, increasing 36% population 40%. Combined oral (COCs) most commonly used method groups. COCs decreased period decline greatest those below 25 years. From 2016 80% new users received recommended COC containing levonorgestrel. Use estrogen-free (LARCs) gestagen pills, has increased. After 2014 LARCs, especially subdermal implant, increased steeply younger women. Oslo had lowest proportion teenagers young adults whole period, while 30-49-yearolds more line with other counties.Conclusion: (COC) However, < years, where corresponding LARC taken place, mainly onwards. Four out five who initiated steep LARCs recent implies that prescribers have high compliance recommendations authorities.
